Tesla CEO Elon Musk sits down with CCTV Finance to discuss China's remarkable progress, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory, and the future of humanoid robots and AI.
At noon local time on the 22nd (early this morning Beijing time), Tesla CEO Elon Musk sat down for an exclusive interview with CCTV Finance in Silicon Valley, California, sharing his thoughts on the Chinese market, frontier technology, and future cooperation.
During the interview, Musk once again recommended visiting China to everyone. He said that as long as you have the time, you must go there yourself.
The amount of progress that happens from one year to the next, or even within a year—it's very visible. You can see the new buildings, the new infrastructure, and it's also obvious to see, just walking around the streets, that the increased prosperity of the average Chinese citizen has increased tremendously.
If you have one opportunity to bring one American entrepreneur to visit China for the first time, what will be the most important experience you want him to have first?
Well, I would generally recommend, um...I mean, as much time as that person can devote to China, they should, because China has so many things to see. I took the bullet train from Beijing to Xi'an; that was a great experience. Train stations are amazing. The Terracotta Warriors are one of the wonders of the world, and just make sure you look out the window and you're not on your phone, 'cause there's so much to see.
Yeah, I always recommend everyone to experience going to see China.
Yes, any words...no words can do it justice.
At the end of July this year, Tesla's 10 millionth electric vehicle rolled off the production line, making it the first pure electric vehicle manufacturer globally to surpass a cumulative production of 10 million units. Since Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory began deliveries at the end of 2019, it has produced over 4.5 million vehicles, accounting for about 45% of Tesla's total global output. It remains Tesla's largest global export hub, continuously serving China.
It's magic. The reason for Shanghai is because of the Chinese people. What we have is a Tesla China team that is just incredibly talented, hardworking, and trustworthy, and the quality is excellent.
In his interview with CCTV Finance, Musk predicted that the global number of humanoid robots will reach at least 1 billion units within the next 10 years. Assuming annual production doubles every year, it could reach 100 billion units in 20 years. To adapt to this era, young people should learn as much knowledge as possible and master ...
At least a billion humanoid robots within 10 years, assuming things roughly double per year; then that's about every four years you have a 10x increase. You know, maybe that would mean, say, in 15 years there are 10 billion robots, and in 20 years, 100 billion. Wouldn't it be great if everyone could have their own personal C-3PO or R2-D2? But even better than that, like more productive... That could take care of... and be a one-on-one teacher for your child, and taking care of any jobs that you can think of in many companies where one person... may manage thousands of robots, physical robots as well as digital agents.
Musk stated in the interview that robot speed... humans find it hard to match the reaction speed.
It was like, I mean, everyone in America was fascinated by that, by the way. It was all over US social media. Well, it's entertaining to watch, but it also shows you the progress of humanoid robotics. Like, it wouldn't be entertaining to watch if the robots just fell over, of course. So, you know, the robots are boxing and wrestling, running, doing gymnastics. It's pretty cool. So, I mean, the future is going to have a lot of robots.
Musk noted that the speed of development in the AI field is dizzying, and even he himself finds AI, well, it still feels... shocking. Robots will do more than humans could possibly think of.
There is a finite amount of things you could do as a human within reason. So, I think the robots will actually run out of things to do for humans, and then they will do things for themselves because they run out of things to do for humans.
Musk indicated that after the large-scale promotion of robots, the threshold for use lies not in the hardware itself, but in whether people can propose clear and specific requirements to the robots. He suggests young students study as broadly as possible, combining humanities, arts, and sciences.
A broad-based education is possible that includes arts and sciences, engineering, wide general knowledge. Like, in order to know what to ask the robots for, you need to be able to formulate the question, and with the broadest possible general knowledge, you'll be better able to formulate the questions, or what they call 'prompt engineering,' I guess. But you've got to convey your wishes to the robot. And as crazy as that sounds, we will run out... there will be so many AI agents that AI will be eager to hear any request that you could possibly have.
